Our Story Begins…

The community at St. John’s Episcopal Church has deep roots as far back as Claiborne and Perdue Hill back in 1858. St. James Episcopal Church was founded in Claiborne at this time with the assistance of the Rt. Reverend Nicholas Hamner Cobbs. After the Civil War, Claiborne began to decline and by 1872, the town was completely abandoned, and the congregation was dissolved with most of the faithful moving to Perdue Hill. Members of that same congregation many years later came together to form the congregation at St. John’s today. Throughout the years, a resilient congregation has persisted and continues on today in the heart of Monroeville, Alabama. We are an inclusive community who shares one Bread and one Cup of Salvation poured out for all of the beloved children of God.
